VARSITY BLUES DEFEAT BOLD IN NAIL-BITER

In their second game of the OUA Baseball Regional Qualifiers, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team earned a 9-8 victory over the TMU Bold on Saturday (Oct. 7) afternoon.

With the win, U of T improve to 2-0 in round robin play with one game remaining before the Regional final which will see the winner advance to the OUA Championship in Hamilton next weekend.

The Blues were impressive early, jumping out to a 8-1 lead over the Bold after four innings of action. However, TMU closed the gap with six runs scored between the fifth and sixth innings, but the steady scoring for the Toronto offence proved to be enough.

Continuing his strong performance at the crucial weekend tournament, Kristyan Puyol-Gennosar went 2-for-4 at the plate with a game-high three RBI, while also crossing the plate twice himself for two runs. Adding to Toronto's scoring, both Lemuel Beach and Niko Kekatos tallied two RBI apiece, while Aaron Kreithen and Tyler Wingfield added single markers each.

Starting on the mound for the Blues, Clayton Winteler went five full innings striking out three, while conceding four earned runs on seven hits and four walks. Both Ethan Kwong and Paul Kosztowniak appeared in relief to help secure the U of T victory.

Toronto will finish round robin play tomorrow (Oct. 8) afternoon with a game versus the Laurentian Voyageurs at 12 p.m. Should the Blues advance to the Regional final, first-pitch in the deciding game is set for 3:30 p.m.
