U OF T SCORE A TRIO OF VICTORIES

Hosting the TMU Bold at Dan Laing Field on Saturday (Sept. 30) before making the long trip north to face the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday (Oct. 1), the University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team picked up three wins in the back-to-back doubleheaders.

Opening the weekend on home turf, the Blues split their series with the Bold falling 10-9 before rebounding with a convincing 18-7 victory.

In the opener on Saturday, U of T found themselves battling from behind trailing TMU 8-3 after two innings of action, However, The Blues put pressure on the Bold coming to within one run with four runs scored in the seventh, but the comeback finished just short. Third-year infielder Jakob Cellupica was outstanding for the Blues, going 2-for-3 with a double and home run, scoring three RBI and two runs. Meanwhile, veteran Niko Kekatos added three hits finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Sam Aslanowicz went 2-for-4, including a triple, registering a stolen base, one RBI, and two runs.

In Game 2, the Blues bats continued to shine, with Cellupica once again leading the way with another double and home run performance, scoring five RBI and two runs. Nine Toronto batters in total would record an RBI in the dominating win, with Owen Taylor recording three and Lemuel Beach adding two to round out the double-digit scorers. On the mound, U of T starting pitcher Connor Broughton delivered three solid innings, conceding just two earned runs on six hits while striking out three. Toronto saw three pitchers appear in relief to claim the win.

After the long trip north on Sunday, Toronto showed no signs of sluggishness in the opener as Cellupica added another four RBI to his weekend total finishing the Game 1 victory going 3-for-5. The trio of Beach, Kekatos, and Aslanowicz all added an RBI to round out the Blue scoring. U of T pitchers Ethan Kwong and Kevin Angers combined to strikeout 10 Voyageurs batters in the win.

In a much closer Game 2, it wasn't until the eighth inning that the first runs were scored, as an Aslanowicz sacrifice fly and Kristyan Puyols-Gennosar single proved to be enough for the Blues to capture the one-run win. On the mound, starting pitcher Clayton Winteler was spectacular for Toronto, shutting out Laurentian through five innings, giving up just two hits and one walk, while striking out four. Patrick Staszyzyn and Owen Taylor appeared in relief for the Blues, totaling four strikouts between the pair over three innings of work.

Toronto now will prepare for the OUA Regionals scheduled for this upcoming weekend where the OUA Championship participants will be determined. The Blues will face the Bold, Voyageurs, and York Lions between October 6-7 at Concord/Thornhill Regional Park with a berth to the provincial championship on the line.
