BLUES PLACE SECOND IN LABOUR DAY TOURNAMENT

The Varsity Blues baseball team spent their holiday weekend playing host to the U of T Labour Day Classic from September 2-4.

With Humber College, McGill and Laurier all making the trip to Dan Lang Field for the tournament, the Varsity Blues ultimately went on to win their first four games before falling to the Golden Hawks in the final.

The Blues got underway on Friday against the Humber Hawks. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead after two innings of the play, the Blues were able to establish a lead early. In the top of the fifth, Humber would get on the board, but the Blues would quickly respond in the bottom half on a homerun from Brendan Colley. The solo shot would round out a 3-1 Toronto victory.

In their second contest, the Blues took on McGill. Both teams were able to score a run in the first inning, with Toronto's coming on a homerun from second-year commerce student, Lemuel Beach. From there, the Blues quickly put up a pair of crooked numbers scoring three times in the both second and third innings for an early 7-1 advantage. McGill would go on to score twice in the fifth but that was as close as they would get, as the Blues won their second straight contest.

Finishing up round-robin play, the Varsity Blues (2-0) took on the Laurier Golden Hawks (2-0) with first place on the line. The Hawks would take a quick 3-0 lead but Toronto battled back. Scoring twice in the bottom of the second, the Blues pulled within one, before exploding for six runs in the third, thanks to a bases-clearing double from first baseman, Niko Kekatos. Leading 9-6 after five, the Blues would put the game out of reach in the sixth on another bases-clearing double from Kekatos, as Toronto went on to win 13-6.

On Sunday, the playoff schedule began with the Blues battling Humber College for a second time. Behind six strong innings from Owen Taylor, in which he surrendered just one run, Toronto would punch their ticket to the Labour Day Classic final with a 5-2 victory.

In the final, the Blues met the Golden Hawks. Hitting his second homerun of the tournament, Beach put the Blues up 2-1 after one. After Laurier scored four unanswered runs, the Blues cut into the deficit with a run in the sixth, trimming the Laurier lead to 6-4. In the end, the Golden Hawks would be crowned Labour Day Classic champions with a 9-5 victory over the hosts.

For Toronto, their attention now turns towards the OUA regular season. The Blues will head to Sudbury on September 10 for a double-header against Laurentian to open their season.
