BACK-TO-BACK TITLE BID COMES UP ONE GAME SHORT

Box Score The drive for back-to-back OUA championships came up just one game short for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday afternoon in Kitchener, Ont.

Taking on the Queen's Gaels in the 2022 OUA championship, the Blues fell 13-11 after a crazy nine innings of baseball.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Riding the momentum of yesterday's win over Waterloo, the Blues bats came out swinging. Before the first inning came to a close, Toronto was able to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

After the Gaels got on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the third, the Blues quickly got those two runs back, highlighted by a Brendan Colley solo moonshot.

For Colley, he was just getting started. With the Blues leading 7-3 in the fifth, the second-year third baseman came up to the plate and launched his second solo home run of the contest to restore the Blues five run lead.

Toronto's five run advantage would continue to hold for a couple more innings, but in the seventh, the Gaels began to chip away. Tallying three runs, Queen's trimmed the lead to 8-6. Then in the top of the eighth, the Gaels took their first lead of the game on a three-run home run. Queen's would not stop there, adding three more runs before the half-inning ended to put the Gaels up 12-8.

Despite the sudden change in momentum, that did not seem to panic the Blues as they responded with three runs of their own pulling them within one.

However, after the Gaels added one more run in the top of the ninth, Toronto was unable to get anything going in the bottom half.

Getting the start for the Blues, Kento Moriyoshi put in five innings of work, allowing three runs.

Earlier in the day, the Guelph Gryphons defeated the Waterloo Warriors to claim the bronze medal.
