The OUA defending champion University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team opened the 2018 championship with a 4-3 victory over the Western Mustangs on Friday evening in Ajax, Ont.

Tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, and final, inning, Gabriel Nakonechny hit a walk off single to secure the victory.

Nackonechny led all players with three hits, while veteran Tanner Young-Schultz had two hits and one RBI.

Sophomore standout Mateos Kekatos pitched six innings, allowing six hits and striking out four, while Grant Shantz earned the win, pitching two innings, striking out two.

The Blues wrap up pool play tomorrow as they take on the Brock Badgers (11:30am) and McMaster Marauders (2:00pm).
