The University of Toronto Varsity blues baseball team continued their stellar offensive performance over the weekend (Oct. 1) versus the McMaster Marauders, picking up an 8-0 shutout victory after a high-scoring 12-7 loss.
The Varsity Blues recorded 35 runs over four games this weekend, going 3-1 overall following the doubleheaders with Ryerson and McMaster, and now sit tied with for third in the OUA with games in hand.
U of T opened their first match versus the Marauders with an impressive five-run first inning. However, fielding errors from the Varsity Blues over the next several innings allowed McMaster to come back for a win in what became a high-scoring contest. Offensively, right-fielder Sebastian Lech recorded four RBI for Toronto, with Vijay Ramnarace, Tanner Young-Schultz, and Bradley Bedford all drove in one. Starting pitcher Colin Edwards allowed two earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched, striking out two, while Peter Nash and Alex Tabascio appeared in relief.
The Varsity Blues cleaned up their defensive effort in the second game of the afternoon, delivering the dominant shutout victory. On the mound for Toronto was second-year Kinesiology major Mateos Kekatos who pitched five-innings of shutout ball. Drew Valade and Grant Shantz came in relief to maintain the zero on the board for the Marauders. At the plate, Toronto drove in seven runs in the first four innings, led by Bedford's 2-for-3 performance with the bat, driving in two RBI while also scoring twice himself. First-year second baseman Mark Douris also picked up two RBI, with Spencer Muirhead, Cameron Martin, and Junya Oshima driving in one each.
The Blue and White will return home to Dan Lang Field on Friday, October 6 where they will end their regular season against the OUA leading Laurier Golden Hawks. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
