WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD WINS 2ND STRAIGHT NATIONAL TITLE

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's track and field team successfully defended their team title, while the men earned the national bronze medal as the 2016 CIS championships wrapped up on Saturday afternoon (March 12) at York University.

It marks U of T's fifth national title and second back-to-back wins (1997-98) in program history. Toronto's women won eight medals, including four titles over the three-day meet.

The Blues finished the meet with 99 points, ahead of Guelph (85) and Western (75.5).

Toronto's men earned the national bronze medal with 56 points, one point ahead of the host York Lions. The Blues won five medals, two being individual gold, at the championships.

Gabriela Stafford was named the CIS female performer of the meet, while Blues head coach Carl Georgevski earned CIS women's track and field coach of the year honours for the second straight year. 



Day 3 Recap:

Third-year distance specialist Gabriela Stafford earned her second gold medal in as many days, crossing the women's 1500m finish line in 4:23.01.

Fifth-year veteran Julia Stille won her first CIS gold medal, winning the women's triple jump with a distance of 12.72m.

Sacha Smart continued his stellar performance, earning the silver medal in the 600m in a time of 1:19.11, while veteran Rachel Jewett picked up the bronze medal in the women's 600m for the second straight year in a time of 1:30.12.

Danielle Delage cleared 1.73m to claim the silver medal in the women's high jump.

U of T's women's 4x800 team of Katrina Innanen, Honor Walmsley, Madeline Warren and Rachel Jewett placed second in a time of 3:46.36, while the Blues men's team of Isiah Weathers, Kostas Renieris, Sacha Smart and Rayshaun Franklin were also second in a time of 3:17.26 to secure Toronto's team podium finish.

Toronto's women's 4x200 relay team of Katrina Innanen, Madeline Warren, Phoebe Simmons and Lindsay Brandys placed seventh in a time of 1:39.89.
