VARSITY BLUES EARN THREE U SPORTS MEDALS ON DAY 2

On Day 2 (Mar. 6) of the 2026 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues earned three national medals.

Capturing the first medal of the national championships for the Varsity Blues, third-year thrower Jason Okpere claimed a U SPORTS silver in the men's weight throw. The 2026 OUA champion delivered a best throw of 18.86m on his fourth of six attempts, surpassing his provincial gold medal toss of 17.69m by more than a metre. Along with receiving U SPORTS second team All-Canadian honours for the silver, the distance also established a new U of T program record, breaking the previous mark of 18.83m set by Ezana Debalkew in 2019.

Adding to her already large medal collection, fifth-year runner Julia Agostinelli grabbed U SPORTS silver in the women's 1000m. The middle distance and distance specialist crossed the line in a time of 2:45.01, improving upon her OUA gold medal time of 2:46.71 to garner U SPORTS second team All-Canadian honours. Teammate Parker Hopkins also placed ninth in the event with a time of 2:49.68.

The final medal for the Blues on Day 2 came courtesy 2026 U SPORTS Male Field Athlete of the Year Aiden Grout. Competing in his signature event, the fifth-year Varsity Blues veteran won his third career U SPORTS high jump gold medal. Grout was the lone athlete to clear 2.18m in the field of 12. Second-year standout Alec Brent also placed fifth overall in the event successfully completing a best jump of 2.06m.

After a seventh-place finish in the women's weight throw on Day 1, Maakor Okai rounded out her national championship performance with a sixth-place finish in the women's shot put. Showing incredible improvement, the second-year thrower registered a best toss of 12.81m on her second of six total attempts.

The Blues concluded the day with the 4x800m relays. The women's team of Tatiana Lattanzio, Parker Hopkins, Madelyn Bullock, and Agostinelli placed sixth overall, while the U of T men's team of Moses Aidoo, Shan Dhanoa, Brandon Cidade, and Nick Trieu finished 12th.

In a very tight race for the podium after 10 of 17 events, the U of T men rank eighth in the team standings with 27 points, sitting just seven points back of a podium position. Meanwhile, the Varsity Blues women rank seventh overall after 11 total events with 21 points.
