NATIONAL BERTH STILL UP FOR GRABS DESPITE NARROW SEMI-FINAL LOSS

Box Score The No. 5 University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team will be looking to claim OUA bronze for the second year in a row following a tough 1-0 semifinal loss to the top seeded and defending CIS champion York Lions Saturday afternoon (Nov. 5) at Birchmount Stadium.

In a defensive battle the Varsity Blues were able to keep down the high-powered Lions offence for nearly a full 90 minutes. York's attack features two top 15 goal scorers in Cristian Cavallini and Milan Beader and finished third in the province in total goals this season with 49.

However, U of T goalkeeper Mark Rogal stood tall making a number of spectacular saves until the Lions finally solved the OUA clean sheets leader in the 87th minute.

Utilizing a quick transition, the Lions were able to send a shot in on the Blues net where a scramble ensued and Beader secured York's place in the gold-medal match tomorrow afternoon tipping in the lone goal.

The Varsity Blues will now challenge the Ryerson Rams tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 6) for OUA bronze and the final OUA position in the U Sports national championship hosted by the Guelph Gryphons next weekend (Nov. 10-13). U of T handed the Rams their only loss this season adding to the intensity of the critical Toronto showdown. Action kicks off at 12 p.m. from Birchmount Stadium with the match being streamed live on OUA.tv.
