The No. 6 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team picked up their second straight win, defeating the Trent Excalibur 2-0 at Varsity Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 20) afternoon.
Helping lead the Blues to victory was third-year forward Niklas Hallam. The Victoria, B.C., native recorded his third two-goal game in a row and has eight goals through U of T's first six matches of the season.
Clashing for the second time in a one week span, the Blues and Excalibur picked up right where they left off their previous match. Each team had chances early as second-year goalkeeper Shan Perera made a 10
th minute stop on John Moncada to set the tone. The Blues began to test Trent's goalkeeper Jack Belanger as the first half progressed, generating momentum that would stay on their side later in the match. The Excalibur had a chance in added time but a block by Hallam sent the two teams to the locker room scoreless.
In the second half U of T got their breakthrough when a 54
th minute foul in the box by the Excalibur sent Hallam to the spot. On the ensuing penalty, the kinesiology student beat a diving Belanger on the left side of the net to give Toronto the advantage. The Blues didn't let up, with Hallam getting a burst of speed and beating two Excalibur defenders, rifling a shot past Belanger to give the Blue and White a 2-0 lead.
From there, U of T controlled the pace of play, dictating possession and forcing the Excalibur to commit six fouls in the second half. The Excalibur pushed right up until the end but a strong defensive clinic by the Blues propelled them to victory in Toronto's first clean sheet of the 2026 season.
The Blues will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 26) afternoon when they travel to Kingston for a clash with the RMC Paladins. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. with live stats available
