BLUES DROP GAME 1 TO HAWKS AT OUA CHAMPIONSHIP

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team fell 11-5 to the top-seeded Laurier Golden Hawks on Day 1 of the 2016 OUA championship at Dan Lang Field.
 
The Blues will now face the Guelph Gryphons, who fell to the Brock Badgers 7-6, in a must-win Round 2 match-up tomorrow morning (Oct. 15) at Ajax Sportsplex at 10 a.m.
 
Toronto got out to a great start and led 3-0 after the top of the second inning. Roy Suzuki and Bradley Bedford both scored in the first, with veteran Brandon Hadfield scoring in the second off a wild pitch.
 
The Laurier bats came to life in the bottom of the second though as a Connor Patterson single drove in two runs to bring the game within one (3-2).
 
U of T extended their lead as Andrew Mannone drove in Kyle Bowers in the top of the third, but the Blues struggled in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, Toronto walked in John King to bring the game back within one (4-3).
 
Laurier put the game away, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Christian Hauck earned the win on the mound for the Hawks, striking out three in six innings. Patterson led all players with three hits and three RBI in the victory.
 
Bedford and Bowers led Toronto with three hits each, with Bedford driving in two runs on the day. Starting pitcher Josh Graham struck out four through the first three innings.
