BLUES HIT DOUBLE DIGITS IN SEASON OPENING SPLIT

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team opened their 2015 season on the road splitting doubleheader against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, September 12.

Toronto's offence was humming as they were able to score double digits in both games, falling 13-11 in Game 1 before trouncing the Warriors 14-1 in Game 2.
Game 1 saw the Varsity Blues get on the board quickly as they were able to score seven runs in the first two innings. However, Waterloo responded later in the game scoring in three consecutive innings to establish a lead the Blues could not answer.

Both first baseman Tanner Young-Schultz (Stratford, Ont.) and second baseman Bradley Bedford (Burlington, Ont.) would collect four RBI's apiece in the high-scoring opener. The two infielders ended the weekend tied for second in the OUA in runs batted in. Meanwhile, the Blues as a team also saw major success on the base paths showing off their team speed with five stolen bases in Game 1 alone.

Despite the opening loss, the Blues offence kept rolling in Game 2, highlighted by first-year second baseman Gabriel Nakonechny's (Toronto, Ont.) performance, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a homerun and three RBI's. Add in a stellar pitching performance from first-year David Pham (Toronto, Ont.) who pitched the complete game allowing only three hits and one earned run and the Varsity Blues displayed their dominant capabilities.

Toronto will now prepare for a hectic home opening weekend as they first welcome cross-town rivals Ryerson Rams to Dan Lang Field on Saturday, September 19 with the first pitch of the doubleheader being thrown out at 12 p.m. There will be not rest for the Blues as they will host a second doubleheader Sunday, September 20 when they take on the visiting Guelph Gryphons.
