OUA BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team heads to London, Ont., for the 2015 OUA championship, October 16-18, hosted by the Western Mustangs.

The Blues are in search of their fifth OUA title in program history and first since winning back-to-back in 2011 and 2012. Toronto, Western and Brock have all won the banner four times, while Laurier and McMaster have won it once since its inception in 2001.

The Varsity Blues finished the regular season in fifth place with an 8-10 record. They will take on the second-seeded Laurier Golden Hawks (14-4) in Game 1 of the double elimination championship on Friday at 12 p.m.

Let's take a look at the Blues heading into this weekend's championship:

Toronto's success came when the team was able to combine their strong pitching with excellent work on the base paths, a strategy that was able to be realized due to the team's rare abundance of speed and power hitting.

Third-year outfielder Bradley Bedford led the entire OUA in stolen bases with 12, while teammates Anthony Spignesi, Gabriel Nakonechny, and Tanner Young Shultz all ranked in the OUA top 10 as well. Bedford's outstanding season also saw him lead the team in batting average (.345) and RBI, finishing the regular season with 13 on 19 hits.

Meanwhile, newcomers Spignesi and Nakonechny also made their presence felt throughout the league. First-year utility man Spignesi earned OUA Peak Performer of the week honours this season, while fellow rookieNakonechny finished fourth in the OUA in slugging percentage at .559. This power-hitting included four triples which led the OUA this season.

On the mound, the Varsity Blues were led by third-year pitcher Colin Edwards. Edwards' outstanding season saw him lead the OUA in innings pitched (39.1), wins (4), and complete game (3). The Scarborough native also led the Blues with 19 strikeouts and finished the season with a 2.97 ERA.
