The OUA defending champion Varsity Blues baseball team opened their 2013 regular season campaign with a narrow 11-9 loss to the Brock Badgers on Wednesday, September 4 at Dan Lang Field.

Rookie first baseman Bradley Bedford of Burlington, Ont., led the Blues with two hits and two RBI, while third-year catcher Kyle Bowers (Toronto) had one hit and two RBI in the loss.Â
Veteran pitcher Ryan Donnelly (Toronto) got the start on the mound, pitching 5.2 innings, striking out one, while allowing eight runs on 10 hits.Â
Down 5-0 after the first two innings, the Blues rallied and brough the game within one with two runs in the bottom of the third and fifth. The Badgers responded with three runs in the sixth; however, the Blues bounced back again and headed into the ninth down 8-7.Â
Brock was able to score three in the top of the inning and the Blues could only muster two runs as their comeback fell short.Â

The Varsity Blues return to action this Saturday, September 7 as they head to Milton, Ont., to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks and Queen's Gaels.Â
