DESKA SHINES ON THE MOUND AS BLUES DOWN HAWKS

Fifth-year pitcher Marek Deska had a phenomenal day on the mound as the Varsity Blues baseball team defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-1 and 4-1 on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 25) at Scarborough Campus.

The Blues also celebrated the naming of their diamond in a special ceremony between the two games.  U of T named the diamond at UTSC Dan Lang Field, in honour of the long-time head coach and Blues baseball pioneer.

A native of Mississauga, Ont., Deska pitched the complete second game of the day in leading Toronto to the 4-1 victory.  He recorded an outstanding 15 strikeouts and allowed only four hits over seven innings of work.

Rookie third baseman Harrison Carmichael had two hits and 1 RBI in the win.

The first game of the day proved to be a close affair and the game remained deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.  Sophomore first baseman Brent Page ended the game with a walk-off single to score Jonathan Sartor and secure the one-run victory.

Page had two RBI and three hits, while veteran pitcher Tyler Wilson of Port Hope, Ont., struck out four over seven innings of work.

The Varsity Blues return to the field this Wednesday, September 28 as they travel to Burlington, Ont., to take on the McMaster Marauders.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
