The University of Toronto is set to name the baseball diamond at the University of Toronto, Scarborough campus, Dan Lang Field in honour of the long-time head coach and Varsity Blues baseball pioneer.
The official ceremony will take place at the field on Sunday, September 25 between the first and second games of the Blues doubleheader versus the Laurier Golden Hawks.
University of Toronto President David Naylor, UTSC Principal Franco Vaccarino and Professor Ira Jacobs, dean of the Faculty of Physical Education & Health, will be on hand to celebrate the momentous occasion.
“Dan is the type of person to go above and beyond at whatever he does,” said Beth Ali, director of intercollegiate & high performance sport at the University of Toronto. “What better way to honour all of his hard work and contributions over the years than to rename the field that he helped facilitate.”
A 2010 U of T Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Lang has had a lasting impression on intercollegiate athletics and their role in the community.
In his 13 seasons as the head coach of the Varsity Blues baseball team, he was twice named OUA coach of the year (2004, 2006). He is Toronto’s longest standing head baseball coach and produced more than 20 league all-stars during his tenure. Under his guidance, the Varsity Blues won two OUA championships, two OUA silver medals and earned two Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association (CIBA) silver medals (1999 and 2000) and four CIABA East division championship titles.
Through successful fundraising, Lang shepherded the project for the Varsity Blues permanent baseball facility, currently located at U of T’s Scarborough Campus. In 2004, he began a free clinic program for Toronto Parks and Recreation as well as the North Toronto Baseball Association.
Lang was also Vice Provost (planning and budget) at the University of Toronto, where he also held the positions of the University’s registrar, vice president, computing and communications, as well as senior policy advisor to the President.
Lang also held an appointment in the division of management and economics at the University of Toronto Scarborough. He was chair of the Council of Ontario Universities Committee on Accountability.
