BLUES STILL HOT, GO 3-1 THIS WEEKEND

The Varsity Blues baseball team squeaked out two close wins over the McMaster Marauders before going 1-1 versus the Guelph Gryphons this weekend at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.

The Blues improve to 6-2 on the season and sit in third place in the OUA standings.

Veteran pitcher Tyler Wilson pitched a complete game in a 2-1 victory over the Marauders on Saturday.  The Port Hope, Ont., native struck out three and allowed only three hits over seven innings of work.

Jamie Lekas had two RBI in the win.

Andrew Bergmann followed in Wilson’s steps in the second game of the day. The fifth-year pitcher from Pickering, Ont., struck out four over seven innings of action in the 3-2 victory.

Down 2-0 after the first inning, the Blues tied it with two runs in the bottom of the third and then sealed the victory in the sixth as a sacrifice fly by Andrew Mannone brought in Peter Nash for the winning run.

The Blues got off to a slow start on Sunday, dropping their first game versus Guelph 9-3.  Ryan Donnelly struck out seven in five innings in the loss.

Toronto rebounded with a narrow 3-2 win in the second game of the day. Down 2-1 heading into the sixth, the Blues drove in two runs to solidify the come-from-behind victory.

Marek Deska pitched the complete game, striking out three, allowing only two hits in the win.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 24 as they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Warriors.  The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
