Team captain Darragh McGee scored two goals and added one assist to lead the No. 4 Varsity Blues men`s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday, September 11 at Varsity Centre.
With the win, the Blues improve to 2-1 and sit in first place in the OUA East division. The Voyageurs drop to 1-2 and are in a three-way tie for second.
A native of Donegal, Ireland, McGee opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he caught Laurentian goalkeeper Matthew George out of position, sending a free kick into the far side of the net.
About 20 minutes later, McGee sent a perfectly-placed cross to second-year striker Mario Kovacevic who buried for his third goal of the weekend.
The Blues held a 2-0 lead at the half.
Toronto was equally as dominant in the second half. First-year defender Nikola Paunic scored his first goal as a Varsity Blue in the 58th minute and McGee added his second of the game 20 minutes later.
Daniel O`Connor (Ajax, Ont.) would spoil the shut out when he was awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute. The third-year midfielder sent a hard shot past a diving John Smits into the bottom left corner of the net.
The Varsity Blues return to the field next Sunday, September 18 when they play the Ryerson Rams at Esther Shiner Stadium.
