The Varsity Blues baseball team came up with two big wins over the OUA defending champion Western Mustangs on Saturday, September 25 at Scarborough Campus.
U of T came away with a narrow 5-3 victory, before shutting out the Mustangs 4-0 in the second game of the day.
Tyler Wilson (Port Hope, Ont.) allowed only three hits in seven innings on the mound before first-year pitcher Steven Palladino of Boston came in with the bases loaded and no out to save the day and preserve the 5-3 victory.
Jamie Lekas had one hit, one run and two RBI to lead Toronto at the plate. Jonathan Isaacs had a team-high two hits and one run, while Steve Hopkins and Chris Cartile recorded one RBI apiece in the win.
U of T opened the second game of the day scoring all four runs in the first inning. Pitcher Marek Deska pitched a complete game shut out, allowing only two hits over seven innings of work.
Steven Hersch had two hits, one run and a stolen base, while Hopkins had one hit, two RBI and a run to lead the Blues offensively.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow when they travel to Kingston, Ont., to face the Queen’s Gaels. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
