The Varsity Blues baseball team split a doubleheader with the Brock Badgers, first falling 16-7 before coming away with a 7-1 win on Saturday, September 18 at Scarborough Campus.
U of T veteran Marek Deska of Mississauga, Ont., pitched the entire second game, allowing only five hits over seven innings of work. Toronto got out to an early 2-0 lead before Brock brought in their lone run of the game in the fourth. The Blues went on to add five over the last two innings to secure the six-run victory.
Jonathan Isaac of Toronto had three hits, while Blues catcher Jeremy Hopkins, also a native of Toronto recorded two hits and two RBI in the win.
In the first game of the day, the Badgers got out to a 7-0 lead after four innings of play. Toronto exploded for six runs to bring the game within one in the top of the six; however, Brock came right back, scoring six of their own in the bottom of the seventh and adding one run in each of the eight and ninth innings.
Scott Donelly led the Blues at the plate with three hits and one RBI, while fellow Toronto native Jamie Lekas had two hits and one RBI in the loss.
The Badgers were led by Daniel Forte, who had three hits and two RBI. Valeriote, Adam Velocci, and Cameron Graham each had two hits in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow when they travel to Guelph for a doubleheader versus the Gryphons. Game times are set for 1 and 3:30 p.m.
