The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team recorded a 10-5 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday, September 27 in Waterloo, Ont.
The Blues dominated from the get-go, scoring two runs in both the first and second innings and added another in the bottom of the fifth to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Warriors rallied in the top of the sixth batting in three runs, however, the Blues would answer back with four tallies of their own to give themselves the lead for good.
Waterloo would add single runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Varsity Blues walked away with the 10-5 victory.
With two Blues on base, Pat Janssen (Toronto) highlighted the day with a homerun in the bottom of the sixth. Fourth-year catcher Jeremy Hopkins (Toronto) went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, while Jamie Lekas (Toronto) was 1-of-3 with two RBI and three stolen bases. Fourth-year veteran Chris Dahiroc (Ajax, Ont.) went 2-of-3 with two RBI and two stolen bases in the victory.
Mike Fortuna earned the win for the Blues. He scattered seven hits over six innings of work, with four strike outs.
The Varsity Blues return to action on Wednesday, September 30 when they travel to Waterloo, Ont. for a doubleheader versus the Laurier Golden Hawks. Game times are scheduled for 5 and 7:30 p.m.
