MEN'S SOCCER UNDEFEATED THIS WEEKEND, LEAD OUA EAST

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s soccer team went undefeated this past weekend, defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs and the Nipissing Lakers and putting them atop the OUA East standings.

The Varsity Blues started off the weekend with a 3-1 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday, September 26 at Laurentian Soccer Field in Sudbury, Ontario.

The Voyageurs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when David Hysen (Sudbury, Ontario) headed a corner kick past John Smits (Mississauga, Ontario) in the fourth minute of the contest. Laurentian maintained the attack for most of the first half, forcing Smits to make several key saves to keep the deficit to a single goal at half ime.

The Blues came back to life in the second half and Dylan Bams (Fanny Bay, B.C.) would tie the game on a shot from in close in the 52nd minute. Toronto continued to pressure the Voyageurs, which led to an Alexander Raphael (East York, Ont.) goal in the 69th minute to put the Blues ahead 2-1.

Nordo Gooden (Kingston, Jam.) added an insurance marker late in the game as the Blues went on to defeat Laurentian 3-1.

Toronto ended the weekend with a 2-0 win over the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday, Sept. 27 at Education Centre Field at Nipissing University.

There was no scoring until the 55th minute in the second half when Raphael scored his second goal of the weekend to put the Blues up 1-0. Gooden followed suit, finding the back of the net in the 79th minute. Smits made four saves to preserve the shutout.

You can catch the next Varsity Blues home game on Wednesday, October 7, when the Varsity Blues host the Ryerson Rams at Varsity Centre. Game time is scheduled for 9:00 p.m.
