BLUES SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER VS WATERLOO

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team went 1-1 in a doubleheader against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, September 12 at University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.

Toronto dropped the first game 7-4 before coming back with a convincing 12-3 victory in the second game.

In the first game of the day, the Blues found themselves down 4-1 after the fourth inning. Waterloo continued the offensive attack with three runs in the top of the sixth.  Toronto responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, however it wasn't enough as the Warriors walked away with the 7-4 victory.

Fourth-year veteran Chris Dahiroc (Ajax, Ont.) led the Blues with two RBI, while Toronto native David Fallico had four stolen bases.

Ryan Donnelly (Toronto) pitched five innings for the Blues, while Clint Jeon (Toronto) and Jake Gallo (Toronto) pitched one inning apiece.

U of T again struggled through the beginning of the second game and trailed 2-0 after three innings of play. The Blues rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by first-year player Josh Jakymyc’s two-out double to bring in the go-ahead run.

Toronto’s stellar defensive play held a lead-off triple at bay in the top of the fifth and the Blues would go on to score nine runs over the next two innings to earn the 12-3 win.

Jakymyc led the Blues going three-of-four with three RBI, while Gallo, Pat Janssen (Toronto) and Jeremy Hopkins (Suffern, N.Y.) recorded two RBI each in the victory.

Mike Fortuna picked up the Blues first victory of the 2009 OUA regular season, striking out three batters along the way.

The Varsity Blues return to action again on Sunday when they visit the Guelph Gryphons at Hastings Stadium.  Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Notes:

Josh Jakymyc had a breakout day going five-of-seven over both games of the double-header.
