BLUES BASEBALL BEATS BROCK, STILL ALIVE IN PLAYOFF RACE

The Varsity Blues baseball team (9-9) is still alive and are in the hunt for the final OUA playoff spot after coming through with a crucial 2-0 victory over the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines on Monday night (Oct. 5).

Toronto pitcher Greg Katayama (Mississauga, Ont.) got the call and scattered six hits, two walks and one stikeout over five innings of work. Reliever Mike Fortuna (Hamilton, Ont.) came in and struck out three in the final two innings for the save.

The Blues got on the board early with two quick runs in the top of the first inning and that would prove to be enough as Katayam and Fortuna took care of the rest. Toronto’s first four batters of the game each singled with veteran Pat Janssen (Toronto) accounting for the lone RBI. The Blues second run scored on a Badgers wild pitch.

Timely pitching and good defence prevailed as Brock stranded 11 men on base, leaving the bases loaded twice.

The baseball team will need some help this week from the University of Western Ontario. The Mustangs host the Badgers in a doubleheader tonight at Labatt Park in London, Ont. and must win both games. If Brock steals one from Western, Toronto’s hopes of a playoff series are no longer.

Notes:

First-year player Jonathan Isaac (Toronto) was 2-for-3 on the night, while veteran all-star Chris Dahiroc (Ajax, Ont.) went 2-for-4.
