Tyler Wilson pitched a complete game shutout as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team knocked off the first-place Western Mustangs 3-0 on Sunday, October 4 at Scarborough Campus.
The story of the day was Wilson’s performance on the mound. The Port Hope, Ont. native was masterful in keeping the Mustangs bats off-balance with his pinpoint accuracy and change of speeds. He struck out two Mustangs and allowed only eight hits without walking a batter.
The Blues jumped out to an early 1 -0 lead when fourth-year veteran Pat Janssen’s (Toronto) smaked a line-drive single to right centre field, cashing in lead-off man David Fallico (Toronto) in the first inning.
Toronto added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Josh Jakymyc’s (Toronto) infield single scored Chris Dahiroc (Ajax, Ont.) from third base.
The Blues added an insurance run in the seventh with a two-out rally. After Jake Gallo (Toronto) was hit by a pitch, U of T catcher Jeremy Hopkins (Toronto) singled deep in the hole between first and second base. Gallo aggressively went from first to third on the play and later scored when fourth-year faculty of physical education and health student Jamie Lekas (Toronto) hit a single to give the Blues the 3-0 lead.
Still fighting for their playoff lives, the Varsity Blues travel to St. Catharines, Ont. tomorrow (Oct. 5) for the last regular season game versus the Brock Badgers. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
