BLUES DOWN VOYAGEURS IN HOME OPENER

Soccer action
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s soccer team defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 3-0 on Saturday at Varsity Centre.

Forward Nordo Gooden (Kingston, Jam.) and midfielder Geoffrey Borgman (Dixie, Ont.) created many offensive opportunities for the Blues early in the game with their creativity and fancy footwork but were shut down by the Voyageurs steady defence.

In the 44th minute of the game, Borgman opened up the scoring as he headed the ball past Laurentian goalkeeper Scott Cliff (Sudbury, Ont.) to put the Blues up by one.

With a 1-0 lead for most of the second half, the Blues turned up the heat and scored two consecutive goals to secure the win. Alex Raphael (Toronto, Ont.) took a pass from Niko Pesa (Burlington, Ont.) to tally the second goal for the Blues in the 84th minute of the game.

Just one minute later, Seung Bok Lee (Toronto, Ont.) took advantage of a misjudged ball to put the Blues up 3-0.

Toronto natives Dustin Chung and Yannis Gianniotis led the Blues in a solid defensive effort in the win. Gianniotis made a key play early in the game as he blocked a Laurentian shot that was headed straight for open net.

The Varsity Blues men’s team returns to action tomorrow as they face the Nippissing Lakers at 12 p.m. at Varsity Centre. The women’s home opener follows, also against the Lakers, at 2:15 p.m.
