The University of Toronto Varsity Blues No. 6 men’s soccer team came away with a 3-1 victory, while the No. 4 women were upset 2-0 by the Nipissing Lakers women’s squad on Saturday, October 4 at Education Centre Field in North Bay, Ont.
On the men’s side, Nordo Gooden (Kingston, JAM) opened up the scoring for the Blues in the 17th minute of the match and third-year midfielder Mario Nallira (Toronto, Ont.) potted one of his own to give the Blues a 2-0 lead at the half.
Fourth-year Burlington native Niko Pesa scored his fifth goal of the season in the 54th minute of the game. Nipissing forward Shayn Karn (Callander, Ont.) answer back just one minute later but Toronto’s strong defensive play would prevail, giving the Blues a 3-1 victory.
In women’s action, Leesa Church (North Bay, Ont.) put the Lakers on the board in the 11th minute and Amy Laidlaw (Georgetown, Ont.) would add another at the end of the half to put Nipissing up 2-0 at the midway point of the match.
The Blues could not find an answer in the second half and would fall 2-0 for just their second loss of the season.
On Sunday, the Varsity Blues men's team drew the Laurentian Voyageurs to a 0-0 tie.
The Varsity Blues men's and women's soccer teams return home on Wednesday October, 8 to take on the Ryerson Rams at Varsity Centre. The men get underway at 7:00 p.m., with the women to follow at 9:00 p.m.
