The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 89-63 to the Winnipeg Wesmen inside Goldring Centre – Kimil Family Field House on Sunday (Sept. 27) afternoon.
A strong first quarter from the Westmen saw the visitors jump ahead to a 24-11 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. U of T kept pace with Winnipeg in the second and fourth quarters, keeping the game competitive. Toronto was strong on offensive rebounds with 10, but the Wesmen controlled the paint on the defensive side with 40 boards. The Blues finished the game shooting 25 per cent from behind the three-point line and were able to stifle Winnipeg's attack with seven steals.
Leading the way offensively for the Blue and White was fifth-year forward Janet Enge, with a team-high 17 points while shooting over 30 per cent from the field. First-year guard Gracelin Spenrath added 10 points and four assists. Meanwhile, second-year guard Cady Su notched 11 points and shot 43 per cent on three-pointers. First-year forward Itifa Olowola lead the way on rebounds with seven.
For the Wesmen, Jennifer Kallon scored a game-high 22 points and was perfect when shooting behind the three-point line. Avneet Kainth and Jazmin Birch also cracked the double-digit point plateau with 15 and 14 points respectively.
The Blues are back in action on Thursday (Oct. 1) night when they host the UNBC Timberwolves at Goldring Centre. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., with tickets available at
