The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team hosted the Algoma Thunderbirds at Goldring Centre – Kimel Family Field House for an exhibition game on Sunday (Sept. 27) afternoon, picking up a 90-77 win.
The Blues opened the first quarter shooting almost 57 per cent from the field and their tenacious defence held the Thunderbirds to shooting just 16.7 percent from three. A strong second quarter from Algoma, where they outscored Toronto 30-22, pushed the game to a tie at half. Despite the pushback, the Blues outscored Algoma in both the third and fourth quarters to pull away with the 13-point win.
Six Blues scored in double digits during tonight's exhibition. Fifth-year centre Nigel Hylton led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds, shooting over 55 per cent from the field and 60 per cent from three. Fourth-year forward Simeon Jeffers adding another 16 points and six rebounds. Meanwhile, fellow fourth-year forward Lucas Prekovic notched 13 points and eight boards. First-year point guard Andrew Dangelas and second-year guards Mikey Ballout and Duncan McRae adding 12 points each.
Algoma was led by Logan Whitmell scored a game-high 20 points and five rebounds, shooting 53 per cent from the field, assisted by Justin Grant with 15 points and three boards.
Up next, the Blues travel to the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus to host the Muskingum Fighting Muskies. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
