Competing in Montreal at the 2026 Canadian University Tennis Championships (CUTC) this past weekend, both the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's teams garnered national medals.
Entered as the Ontario representatives following OUA championship victories for both U of T teams this past fall, the Varsity Blues men claimed national silver while the Toronto women picked up CUTC bronze.
Opening their run at the national showcase on Friday (May 29) morning, the Toronto men began their weekend with a 7-0 sweep of Dalhousie University in the semifinal round. The Varsity Blues claimed victories in all three doubles matches with No. 1 duo Rassam Yazdi and Lucas Moxk scoring a decisive 8-2 win. Mock would then go on to sweep his singles match, not conceding a single point in the 6-0, 6-0 victory. In the six singles matches, no Dalhousie Tiger scored more than two points. This included standout performances for the Blues in the No. 3 slot from Ben Whitley (6-0, 6-1) and No. 5 position Alex Zhang (6-0, 6-1).
Advancing to the gold medal match on Sunday (May 31), Toronto came up short against the Canada West representative UBC Thunderbirds, falling by a final of 5-1. The combo of Eric Ma and Whitley battled to an 8-4 doubles win, but UBC were able to claim victory in the other two matches to earn the doubles point overall. In the singles matches, Varsity Blues veteran Yazdi was the lone U of T player to pick up a win, defeating his UBC counterpart 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles position. Yazdi would be named tournament MVP after going undefeated in his singles matches from the No. 1 slot. Both Mock and Whitley were also recognized as tournament all-stars.
The U of T women began their run at the Canadian championships on Thursday (May 28) with a hard fought 5-2 semifinal defeat at the hands of the UBC Thunderbirds. After dropping all three doubles matches to lose the doubles point, U of T bounced back with singles victories from No. 1 Anastasiya Dyadchenko (6-4, 6-2) and No. 2 Maria Popova (6-1, 6-3). However, the depth of the Canada West representatives proved to be too much as they were able to secure the crucial final four win, sending Toronto to the bronze medal round.
Facing off against Dalhousie for bronze on Saturday (May 30), U of T earned their third straight national medal with a 6-1 win. Toronto secured the doubles point after the pair of Noelle Vanasse Wilbert and Kaira Xuan earned an 8-2 win and the duo of Kiana Aboosaidi and Barbora Zaviskova shutout their opponents 8-0. From there, all four women would also claim singles victories while Ipek Battal added one more to secure the third step on the podium for U of T. Popova was named a tournament all-star.
