The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's curling team earned a spot in the OUA Championship quarter-finals after finishing sixth during round-robin play with a 3-1 record through the first two days of competition at the Welland Curling Club.
The Blues opened play on Friday morning with a narrow 6-4 win over the Western Mustangs. A critical two points scored in the eighth end secured the first win of the championship for U of T. They followed that with a tough 5-2 loss versus the Guelph Gryphons though to close out Day 1 of competition.
Needing to secure more wins on Day 2, Toronto knocked off the Queen's Gaels 10-3 and the host Brock Badgers 10-6 on Saturday. In both contests, the Blues scored two or more points in three ends, including an impressive six-score third end versus the Gaels to highlight their offensive ability. With the two wins and a 3-1 record, the Blues advanced to the quarter-final round for a third straight season.
The Blues competition roster has consisted of Matthew Prenevost, Marshall MacPherson, Peter Schneider, and Victor Zhong. They will face-off against the Waterloo Warriors tomorrow morning in an elimination match, with action scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
