CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: OUA CURLING

Both the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's curling teams head to the Welland Curling Club this weekend to compete in the 2026 OUA Curling Championships, hosted by Brock University from Feb. 6-8.

For the men, Toronto have been on a roll this season claiming the overall win at the Guelph Invitational, U of T Bonspiel and McMaster Invitational Bonspiel. Having earned wins over seven different OUA squads throughout the 2025-26 season so far, the Blues will be aiming to better their OUA quarter-final exit at each of the last two provincial showcases. Toronto last accomplished a gold medal victory in 2013-14 and most recent provincial medal was a bronze in 2014-15.

Varsity Blues veterans Marshall MacPherson and Matthew Prenevost will once again be counted on, while Peter Schneider, Victor Zhong and Joon-Oh Strazds have all proven to be pivotal pieces to the Blues invitational season success this year.

As for the U of T women, the Blues kept pace with their OUA counterparts during a busy 2025-26 invitational season. Competing at five different events, Toronto have produced wins over Brock, York, Ontario Tech, Guelph, Algoma, and Western. With the experience of victories over several different opponents this season, they are aiming to advance beyond round-robin matches for the first time since 2019-20. U of T's most recent medal finish saw a bronze in 2016-17, while the Toronto women claimed their lone OUA banner in program history in 2000-01.

The trio of third-year Varsity Blues in Stella Armstrong, Nadia Jouaneh and Janice Pang have stepped into a leadership role this season. They are joined by Amanda Smith, Siri He, and Julia Gai for the provincial championships this weekend.

Round-robin games are set to be played across Friday (Feb. 6) and Saturday (Feb. 7), before elimination and medal matches on Sunday (Feb. 8). The U of T women open the showcase with round-robin matches versus Carleton, Trent, York, and McMaster, while the Toronto men will challenge Western, Guelph, Queen's, and Brock.
