VARSITY BLUES BEGIN NEW SEASON AT MCMASTER OPEN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues wrestling team opened their 2026-27 campaign at the McMaster Open on Sunday, Nov. 1.

With 12 wrestlers taking to the mat in the season opening invitational, U of T saw six wrestlers earn Top 4 finishes including a first-place overall for Varsity Blues veteran Josiah Mayers-Noel. Competing in the 76kg bracket, Mayers-Noel never conceded a single point winning each match by an unblemished 10-0 technical fall margin. This included wins over opponents from Kingston Wrestling Club, London Western Wrestling Club, and Brock Wrestling Club.

Also reaching the podium in a busy seven-match outing on Sunday, Oshen Williams grabbed bronze in the 90kg category. Following a narrow 13-10 defeat, Williams bounced back to win six matches in a row en route to the third step on the podium. This included a 10-1 decision win in the bronze medal match versus teammate Ivan Serafinchev.

Rounding out the Top 4 finishes for U of T were Alex Lubczenko in the women's 68kg weight class, Georgia Michalchuk in the women's 59kg bracket, and Sammy Serafinchev in the men's 65kg event.

Next up for the Blues will be the TMU Invitational scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 8.
