The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's rugby team have earned their first playoff berth since 2008, defeating the Brock Badgers 25-21 on Saturday (Oct. 17) night at Varsity Stadium.
With the win, the Blues finish the season with a 4-1-1 (W-L-T) record and will host an OUA quarter-final matchup at Varsity Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 24.
In a historic win for the program, three Blues crossed the try-line. Toronto was a force all game, anchored by fourth-year captain William Kalovec, U of T played their hearts out and made history in the process.
After Brock broke the ice with the game's first try, fourth-year prop Ismail Sheikh responded in the 9
th minute as U of T evened the score. In the 11
th minute, a Ben Wallace try gave U of T their first lead of the game. Trailing 14-12 coming out of the half, the Blue and White punched back with a drop goal courtesy of third-year centre Liam Marshall. Second-year scrum half Luuk Ordeman would give U of T a six-point lead with a 57
th minute try, before Marshall would hit a successful conversion and later a penalty kick to add insurance points for the Blues. As the clock ticked, U of T were a force on defence, holding the fort until the final whistle and celebration ensued.
The Blues will now turn their focus to the OUA quarter-finals on Saturday, Oct. 24. The start time and opponent are to be announced. Tickets are available at
