The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's rugby team fell 28-21 to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Sept. 12) afternoon at Varsity Stadium.

In a game of two halves, the Blues found themselves trailing 28-0 after 40 minutes of play. The Warriors got a pair of tries from Daniel Ngyen and Thomas Richards, meanwhile four successful conversions by Sanad Inrahim put the visiting team in the drivers seat.

In the second half, the Blues looked like a brand-new team. Earning Toronto's first try of the 2026 season was second-year political science and African studies student Arend Wasserman. Keeping momentum on their side, fifth-year prop Vijay Kuo added a try, cutting the deficit in half. With the Varsity Stadium crowd on their side, U of T made it a one-score game when third-year centre Liam Marshall hauled the ball over the try line. Meanwhile, third-year scrum half Yuta Takahashi was a perfect three-for-three on conversions.

The Blues continued to fight for an equalizer as both teams played a fast and physical game right until the very end. With Toronto pushing down the field, Waterloo was able to hold the for to claim victory in the season opener.

U of T is back in action on Friday (Sept. 18) night when they take on the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton. Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
