MEN'S CURLING MOVES INTO OUA QUARTER-FINALS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's curling team advanced to the OUA quarter-final round of the 2025 OUA Men's Curling Championship following strong play through the first two days of the provincial showcase.

Hosted by Guelph University at the Galt Country Club, the Blues finished 2-2 in the round-robin matches, earning wins over York and Western, while falling to Laurier and Waterloo. The two victories were enough for U of T to finish second in Pool B and seventh overall, jumping into the quarter-final round with a showdown versus Carleton on Sunday (Feb. 9) morning.

In a back-and-forth opening contest versus the Golden Hawks on Friday (Feb. 7) morning, the two teams exchanged scores through each of the seven ends. However, a two point third and seventh end allowed Laurier to pull away for a 6-3 victory in the end.

Looking to bounce back in their second outing of the day, the Blues were dominant from the very beginning versus GTA rival York. U of T registered seven points through the first three ends, jumping out to an insurmountable lead. The Lions would get one back in the fourth to eventually settle on the 8-1 victory for the Blue and White.

Shifting to Day 2, Toronto once again found themselves in a see-saw affair with a Waterloo-based opponent in the Warriors. The Blues opened with three in the first, only to have Waterloo immediately respond with three of their own in the second. Another two rocks scored in the third put Toronto back up, but the Warriors once again responded with three over the next two ends. The back-and-forth continued until Waterloo secured the victory with a big four score seventh.

With their playoff position on the line, the Blues needed to win in their fourth and final round-robin match versus Western, and did exactly that with another dominant 7-1 victory. U of T scored in five consecutive ends to open the Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon contest, before adding one more in the seventh end to seal the win and earn their spot in the Top 8.

Quarter-final matches will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 9), with all four quarter-final matches taking place at the same time. The Blues will be in tough versus the 4-0 Ravens, but will aim for upset-after-upset to try and propel themselves into a medal position.
