CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: OUA WRESTLING

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues wrestling team compete at the 2025 OUA Wrestling Championships this Saturday, Jan. 8, with the event hosted by Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

U of T will bring with them a strong contingent of 10 wrestlers between the men's and women's competitions. Under the leadership of first-year head coach Dene Ringuette, the Blues will be aiming for multiple Top 6 finishes across both the men's and women's brackets.

Leading the charge for the Blues will be veteran 100kg wrestler Andrija Rasovic. The physics graduate studies student from Montenegro has had a busy 2024-25 campaign, earning silver at the U of T Open and bronze at both the McMaster Open and TMU Open. He will be looking to better his fifth-place finish in the 100kg category at the provincial championships a year ago.

Also looking to better a fifth-place result at the OUA showcase in 2024, third-year wrestler Ketan Nawbatt will be moving up a weight class, now competing at 68kg. This season the California native earned bronze at the McMaster Open to open the year and fourth-place at the highly competitive Brock Open in early January.

Rounding out the men's roster for this weekend, Jimmy Lin is entered at 57kg, Logan Norton at 65kg, Jacob Fritz at 72kg, Josiah Mayers-Noel at 76kg, Keegan McMartin at 82kg, and Omar Al-Lahham at 90kg.

On the women's side of the draw, Toronto has two athletes set to compete as Dany Wang continues her strong season in the 56kg category, and Maya Salman is entered in the 65kg bracket. Salman collected a silver earlier this season at the McMaster Open, while Wang claimed second at the York Open and third at both the McMaster and TMU Open.

Competition inside the George Leach Centre is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, with gold medal matches set to begin at approximately 3 p.m. The event will be streamed live on oua.tv.
