THREE SENIOR MEDALS AND THREE JUNIOR GOLDS FOR BLUES FENCERS AT BROCK OPEN

With a full contingent competing at the Brock Open this weekend, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues fencing team earned three medals in the senior categories and three gold in the junior events.

Showcasing a strong women's epee group, first-year Blue Valerie Qi claimed gold in both the senior and junior categories. She was joined on the podium in the senior bracket by U of T teammates Lilla Mucsi and Annabelle Wong Hin Sang who both took to the third step after reaching the semifinals. Rounding out the impressive epee display, Anna Mucsi placed fifth, while first-year U of T fencer Angel Liu added another bronze in the junior women's epee.

In the men's epee, Liam Powrie added another junior gold for the Blues while also placing 10th in the 99-person senior field.

The Blues also looked strong in the sabre as first-year mathematics major Richard Chen garnered gold in the men's junior bracket, while also placing 15th in the 78-person senior men's sabre competition. Placing slightly higher in the large field for the senior category, Kevin Shao reached sixth.

As for the U of T women's sabre specialists, Salma Elshakankiri placed fifth in the junior bracket and 15th in the senior competition, while Astrid Chandler achieved a Top 10 result with a ninth-place finish in the senior field of 67 women.

Following the winter break focus will shift to the OUA Championships, with the women's provincial showcase scheduled for late January and the men in early February.
