The University of Toronto wrestling team served as host at the Athletic Centre for 30 teams and 138 wrestlers on Saturday (Nov. 30), hosting the annual U of T Open.
Taking advantage of competing in their home gym, the U of T wrestlers produced some of their best results of the season, accumulating five podium finishes and eight Top 6 results.
Toronto saw three wrestler earn silver medals as Jacob Fritz in the 72kg weight class, Pratham Singh in the 76kg category, and Andrija Rasovic in the 100kg bracket all placed second in their respective classes. For Fritz, an exciting 21-20 decision win over Brock in the quarter-final and 14-3 technical fall victory versus Queen's in the semifinal propelled the fifth-year veteran into the first-place match. However, another tough opponent from Brock would defeat the former Canada West competitor. Blues veteran Singh earned two fall victories over opponents from TMU and Team Xtreme to jump into the gold medal match, but his K-Bay Wrestling Club counterpart would snatch the top step. Finally, Rasovic earned a fall win over Waterloo in the 100kg semifinal round before being caught in a fall himself by the 2024 U SPORTS national champion from Brock in the event final.
Adding to the podium finishes for U of T, Josiah Mayers-Noel placed third in the men's 76kg, while Keegan McMartin also grabbed third place in the 82kg event. Top 6 results were rounded out by a fifth-place finish for Aylah Mayali in the women's 65kg, fifth for Roberto Reali in the men's 82kg, and sixth place for Ketan Nawbatt in the men's 68kg.
With a full men's team compliment, the Blues achieved 27 points putting U of TÂ in third place overall in the men's standings for the tournament. This placed them behind perennial powerhouses Brock and Western, while placing ahead of fellow OUA competitors like York, McMaster, TMU, Guelph, and Queen's.
The U of T Open marked the end of the fall competition schedule for the Varsity Blues. Toronto will return to the mats next in 2025, heading to St. Catharines, Ont., for the ultra-competitive Brock Open on Saturday, Jan. 11.
