BLUES GO UNDEFEATED IN KINGSTON TRIP

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's water polo team earned a 3-0 record on the weekend at the Queen's University Invitational, November 2-3, in Kingston, Ontario.

The Blues took down the Carleton Ravens, Ottawa Gee-Gees, and Queen's Gaels by a combined score of 57-6.

Saturday, November 2: Toronto 17, Carleton 2
The Blues opened the tournament on November 2, 2024, with a commanding 17-2 win against Carleton University. Right from the start, Josie Andrist set the tone, scoring the game's first goal, followed by two quick goals from third-year attacker Sarah August. The Blues maintained relentless offensive pressure throughout the first quarter, with goals from Hannah Levin, Julia Mic, and Rachel Low. Centre-forward Ava Stimson added two more goals, while first-year Daryn Schell contributed to the dominant 8-0 start.

Toronto's defense, coupled with strong goaltending, kept Carleton scoreless in the second quarter, while the Blues offense continued to surge. Left-handed forward Liana Sheridan converted a penalty shot, and Stimson netted two more goals, alongside contributions from August and Low.

In the third quarter, first-year attacker Kriya Vohra found her rhythm with back-to-back goals. Erin Patterson capped off the quarter with a penalty goal, putting the Blues up 15-0. Carleton managed to score twice in the fourth quarter, but Toronto finished strong with Levin and Devon Lynch scoring to seal the win at 17-2.

Sunday, November 3: Toronto 21, Ottawa 0
The second game saw an even more dominant performance from the Varsity Blues, as they shut out the University of Ottawa with a staggering 21-0 victory. Toronto's defense was impeccable, backed by all three goalies contributing to the clean sheet.

Sarah August led the charge with two early counter-attack goals, and goals from Esplen, Mic, and Vohra rounded out the first quarter.

The second quarter was highlighted by the team's speed on counter-attacks, with Levin, Lynch, and August adding to the tally. First-years Blues Suzie Chappuie, Leanne Bolstad, and Julia Mic kept the pressure on Ottawa, each scoring a goal. Liana Sheridan closed out the half with two more goals, extending the lead to 12-0.

In the third quarter, senior attacker Sidney Gagné marked her first goal of the season. Vohra, Chappuie, and Lynch added three more goals as the Blues continued to dominate. The fourth quarter saw no let-up in intensity, as Amy Pearce opened the scoring, followed by goals from Vohra, Schell, and Esplen. The Blues finished with an emphatic 21-0 win.

Sunday, November 3: Toronto 19, Queen's 4
The Blues capped off the weekend with another commanding victory, this time defeating the Queen's Gaels 19-4. Sarah August opened the scoring early, followed by two goals from Amy Pearce to build a strong lead. Sheridan and Mic added goals to close the first quarter.

The Blues continued their offensive onslaught in the second quarter with goals from Lynch, Mic, Schell, and Pearce. Power play opportunities also boosted the score, as August, Andrist, and Lynch each netted a goal.

The third quarter saw further contributions from Andrist and August, reminding Queen's of their speed with two fast-paced goals. Lynch added another, and August capped off the quarter with another goal.

In the final quarter, Gagné opened the scoring, followed by a trio of goals from Sheridan. Lynch added the final goal, securing a 19-4 victory and an undefeated weekend for the Blues.

The Blues' dominant tournament performance was not only marked by their offensive firepower but also by their defensive solidity. With all three goalies getting playing time, Toronto's defensive unit was able to limit their opponents to just six goals across three games, including a complete shut-out against Ottawa. This balanced approach, combining defensive resilience and offensive depth, will serve the team well as they continue their dominance of the NCWP.

The Blues improve to 7-0 on the season, and are back in action on Friday, November 29 at the NCWP Championships.
