The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's curling team is set to compete at the 2023 OUA championship, February 10-12, hosted by Trent University at the Peterborough Curling Club.
Â
The Blues open the championship against the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday morning, before taking on the McMaster Marauders on Friday afternoon. U of T concludes pool play on Saturday against the Brock Badgers and Guelph Gryphons. Quarter-finals are scheduled for Saturday night, with semifinals and medal matches slated for Sunday.
Â
Led by 2021-22 OUA all-star skip Landan Rooney, the young Blues squad is vying for their first provincial banner since 2014 this weekend. Rooney is coming off a tremendous season, winning both the Ontario and Canadian under-21 championships and is preparing for the upcoming 2023 world junior championships, February 25 – March 4, in Füssen, Germany.
Â
"I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is the most talent we've ever had in the program," said Varsity Blues head coach Guy Yerama. "Landon, Daniel and Matthew are all accomplished skips at the under-21 level. We're very hopeful about our chances. The competition is very high and half the field have very strong teams. Â It's going to be a very difficult championship, but we like our chances." Â
Â
Team captain Daniel Hocevar will play vice for the Blues. The computer science major from Toronto is coming off a semifinal finish at the Curling Ontario tankard qualifier last month.
Â
Rookie Matthew Prenevost will play second, while fellow kinesiology major Nelson Wang will play lead for U of T this weekend. The duo played together as one of the top four junior teams last season, with Wang also competing internationally for Chine Taipei.
