Playing three games in 19 hours proved to be too much for the Varsity Blues women's water polo team. Moreover, the games represented the sixth, seventh and eighth games in six days of the California NCAA competition tour.
For the first time in program history, the Blues faced off against a Top 10 ranked school, No. 8 Cal State Long Beach. Under the lights and in cold, windy conditions often punctuated by pouring rain, the Blues put up a good fight in the first quarter against The Beach starters. The score was 1-2 over the opening six minutes before The Beach popped in two more to lead 4-1 heading into the second quarter.
Long Beach State then pulled its starters and played its second and third strings for the remainder of the game allowing the Blues to have relatively competitive quarters before ultimately falling 12-2.
After being shut out for the previous five games, the Blues center forwards, Vega Jones and Julia Decaire provided the goals.
The next morning, the Blues traveled to Cal State Fullerton for a doubleheader against the host Tigers and the Biola University Eagles.
A shaky, sluggish first quarter left the Blues trailing 2-1 but still very much in the game against Fullerton. The Blues defence fell apart in the second quarter giving up five to the Tigers attack. With only two replies, the Blues found themselves in a 7-3 hole from which they never recovered, ultimately losing 10-4.
Hannah Levin led the way with a pair of goals with single tallies from Co-Captains Sarah Wentling and Kaitlyn Palmer.
The fatigue factor only worsened two hours later when the Blues jumped back into the pool to face a rested Eagles squad.
The Biola starters immediately sensed the difference in energy levels and pumped in eight unanswered goals making it the worst opening quarter for the Blues in recent memory.
The Eagles then played their second line for the remainder of the game and the Blues were able to hold even leaving the final score 11-3 in favour of Biola.
Wentling, Palmer and Emma Benoit tallied for the Blues.
The Blues will get a much needed morning off in order to travel up to Thousand Oaks to play Cal Lutheran, the ninth game of their 13-game tour.
