BLUES BOUNCE BACK WITH A PAIR OF WINS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's water polo team raised its record to 2-3 on its California competition tour with a pair of wins to begin the Southern California portion.

First up on the doubleheader scheduled for Day 3 was the Whittier College Poets.

The Blues defence finally found a way to effectively play four quarters, which allowed the offence to build an early 4-1 lead that the team never relinquished. Along with the consistent defence, the other key factor for the Blues was the outside shooting which produced three bar-in goals from distance.  In the end, the Blues were full measure for a 8-4 win.

Hannah Levin paced the attack with three goals, her second consecutive hat trick. Co-captain Sarah Wentling and Emma Benoit each notched a pair of goals while Co-captain Kaitlyn Palmer added a single.

Starting goalie Hana Truchla went the distance in the Toronto net making 12 saves and three steals.

Right after the 3:15pm game, the Blues players quickly changed and drove down to Orange for a 7:00pm tilt with the Chapman University Panthers.

The Blues jumped out to a quick 2-0 first-quarter advantage, only to see the Panthers strike back with three of their own to take a 3-2 half time lead.  Chapman added a fourth consecutive goal to go ahead by two. It looked like the third quarter collapses by the Blues in Northern California would reappear as the fatigue of two games in four hours seemed to be setting in.

However, Toronto awoke from its funk to score three unanswered goals and grab a narrow 5-4 lead heading into the final quarter.  The Blues doubled their lead midway through the fourth period only to see the Panthers cut it back to one with two minutes to play.

The Blues defence then stiffened up again and the offence iced the game with 43 seconds remaining leaving Toronto with a 7-5 win.

Devon Lynch, Wentling and Benoit each netted a pair of goals with Levin providing an additional tally.  Truchla was solid in goal, again going the distance.

The Blues get a much-needed off day before facing the highest ranked school in team history when they travel to Long Beach to play #8 California State University Long Beach.
