BLUES DROP THREE TO OPEN CALIFORNIA TOUR

The Varsity Blues women's water polo team began its mammoth 13-games-in-nine days California competition tour by dropping three games against NCAA schools.

On Day 1, the Blues faced off against Cal State East Bay.  Despite flying in late the night before, Toronto stayed close throughout the match before finally falling 10-7 to the host Pioneers.

Co-captain Kaitlyn Palmer and Serena Spinner paced the Blues attack with a pair of goals each, while co-captain Sarah Wentling, Hannah Levin and Chloe MacVicar added singles.

Hana Truchla and Averi Doxtator split the goaltending duties with Truchla recording several key saves to go along with three steals.

Four hours later, the Blues had driven down to Santa Clara University to play the Broncos.  The game was a tight defensive struggle throughout the first half.  The Blues opened the scoring but then gave up three straight goals to the Broncos before getting one back to end the first half trailing 3-2.  Truchla stymied Santa Clara's shooters time and time again and frustrated the center forwards by making a half dozen steals in her half of work.

The third quarter proved to be the downfall for the Blues, who gave up five consecutive goals before trading goals with the Broncos to trail 9-3 heading into the final frame.  Toronto put up a better fight in the fourth quarter but ended up on the short end of a 12-4 score.

Levin notched a pair of goals while Vega Jones and Rose Esplen supplied one marker each.

Day 2 was the final portion of the Blues first ever visit to Northern California.  The opponent this time was the West Valley College Vikings.

Despite opening the scoring, the Blues were never in the game and eventually lost 14-8.  Levin notched a hat trick to lead the Blues.  Wentling netted a pair of goals while Emma Benoit, Devon Lynch and Palmer chipped in with singles.

The Blues will now travel down to Southern California for ten games in six days.
