BLUES EARN SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE NCWP CHAMPIONSHIP BANNER

The University of Toronto women's water polo team defeated the Queen's Gaels 17-4 in the NCWP Championship final on Sunday (Nov. 26) evening at the Nepean Sportsplex in Ottawa.

The victory marks a seventh consecutive NCWP title, 10th straight provincial banner, and 14th championship in program history for the U of T women's water polo team.

Blues second-year attack Devon Lynch was named NCWP Most Outstanding Player after delivering seven goals across two games at the championship weekend. Third-year goalie Hana Truchla was also recognized as the NCWP Most Outstanding Goalie for a second straight season, while head coach George Gross Jr. was once again named the NCWP Coach of the Year.

In the pool, U of T was dominant from start to finish utilizing its depth of talent to remain fresh throughout the four quarters of action. Third-year attack Hannah Levin led the offence with six goals, including a hat-trick in the first quarter. Lynch added another four goals for the Blues following a hat-trick performance in the semifinal the day prior, while first-year standout Josie Andrist secured a Sunday night hat-trick. Second-year attack Sarah August tallied two goals and the trio of first-year power forward Liana Sheridan, first-year attack Sarah Neal, and second-year utility Rose Esplen each recorded individual markers.

"The goal all year was to play our best game in our last game," said Blues head coach George Gross Jr. "Today, the first quarter was everything we were looking for and it set the tone for the rest of the game. The players now realize how far they can go, which bodes well going forward."

The NCWP Championship marks the conclusion of the fall semester competition schedule for the U of T women's water polo team. The Blues will be back in the water in the new year, beginning 2024 with a trip to southern California to compete in eight matches across a seven-day tour schedule in January.
