TORONTO DOMINANT IN HOME WINS OVER MCMASTER

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's and men's water polo teams both defeated the visiting McMaster Marauders on Monday (Oct. 16) night at Varsity Pool.

Opening the action at the Athletic Centre, the Toronto women defeated McMaster 20-3, followed by a 21-6 win for the U of T men over the visitors.

The women jumped in the pool immediately following a two-game road trip to Erie, Pennsylvania the day prior, competing in their third match in 24 hours and after 600 kilometres of travel on the road, remaining on the top of their game versus the Marauders.

Utilizing a suffocating press defence in combination with a quick counter-attack, the Blues roared out to a 9-0 first quarter lead, before shifting strategies to a drop defence which carried them through the remainder of the dominating victory.

First-year centre forward Lillian Wheatley paced the Blues attack with four goals, scoring one from a penalty shot, twice from the center and once on a counter-attack. Blues leading scorer Hannah Levin added another two goals to her season totals, along with fourth-year co-captains Alexandra Lee and Julia DeCaire. The trio of Sarah August, Rose Esplen and Josie Andrist also tallied two goals each, while Amy Pearce and Liana Sheridan rounded out the scoring with single tallies.

Fourth-year goalies Hana Truchla and Averi Doxtator kept the slate clean in the first half for the Blues, each playing a quarter. Fourth-year goalie Gabrielle Vas finished out the entire second half.

For the men, the Blues were competing in their 13th match through the busy fall schedule. Entering the match after a productive four-game trip through California a week prior, Toronto showcased their skills and abilities in the OUA matchup versus McMaster.

Scoring 21 goals, the Toronto men have scored 20-plus goals in four games this season, which included two impressive home pool wins over NCAA opponents in Michigan and Michigan State earlier this season.

Upcoming this weekend for the Blues women is an arduous three-day four-game east coast swing with games against four NCAA DI schools: Mount St. Mary's (Emmitsburg, MD), Villanova (Villanova, PA), La Salle (Philadelphia, PA) and Wagner (Staten Island, NY). Meanwhile, the Toronto men will challenge the Marauders in Hamilton next Wednesday, Oct. 25 before heading to Kingston for the Queen's Invitational in early November.
