SHUKLA AND AKINDURO NAMED ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

University of Toronto track and field athletes Jazz Shukla and Femi Akinduro have been named the Varsity Blues athletes of the week for the period ending March 20. 

The No. 4 U of T Varsity Blues women's track and field team earned a bronze medal finish at the 2022 OUA championships and Shukla was a big reason for their success.

Winning two gold medals in the 1000m and 1500m, respectively, the Toronto, Ont., native also claimed a silver medal in the 4x400m, earning a total of 26 points for the Blues.

The fifth-year runner is ranked first in the province and the country in the 1000m and is second in the OUA and U SPORTS in the 1500m. She is set to compete for the Blues at the U SPORTS championships taking place at the Irving Oil Field House in Saint John, N.B., from March 31-April 2.  


Improving on their fourth-place finish from 2020, the No. 3 U of T Varsity Blues men's track and field team earned a bronze medal at the 2022 OUA championships and jumper Femi Akinduro contributed 18 points to their bronze medal finish. 

Continuing his dominance in the triple jump, Akinduro won his third straight OUA title and jumped a meet and OUA record of 15.58m. On top of winning in the triple jump, the kinesiology major placed fourth in the high jump and sixth in the long jump.

The Etobicoke, Ont., product is ready to defend his triple jump title at the upcoming 2022 U SPORTS championships, having won the last two in 2019 and 2020.
