The Varsity Blues women's water polo team completed its brief East Coast swing going 1-2 in its final three games.
After a thrilling 11-9 victory against the New York Athletic club on night one, the Blues were faced with the prospect of playing three games in 18 hours while traveling from New York to Greenwich, CT and then to Philadelphia, PA.
Day Two began with the drive from New York to Greenwich for a doubleheader against Greenwich Aquatics Club (GAC) and Marist College.
The Blues jumped on the younger GAC squad to go up 3-1 in the opening quarter. However, the strong defence of the first period disappeared in the second frame as GAC pumped in five goals and closed to within one at the half at 7-6.
The teams battled to a 2-2 tie in the third quarter setting the stage for a "fight to the finish" final frame. The teams went up and down the pool and had several power plays but the Blues won the quarter 4-3 to finish on top 13-11.
Fourth year co-captain Sarah Wentling, second year Hannah Levin and first year Devon Lynch all notched hat tricks to lead the Blues. Fourth year co-captain Lauren Dundee chipped in with a pair of markers while second year Serena Spencer and first year Rose Esplen added singles.
After only a little over an hour of rest, the Blues had to jump back in the pool to face a rested Marist College Red Foxes team, ranked #25 in the NCAA.
The Red Foxes pounced on the Blues defence scoring three times in its first four attacks before Toronto head coach George Gross, Jr. called time out to restructure the team's defensive approach.
The break seemed to settle the Blues down as the squad bounced back to win the remainder of the opening quarter 1-0 to trail 3-1 entering the second period.
The Blues fought hard in a close quarter, losing 2-1 to trail 5-2 at the half.
Two minutes into the third period, Toronto closed the gap to 6-4 but then faltered under the intense Marist attack and give up three unanswered goals, falling behind 9-4.
The Blues regrouped for the final frame, winning it 4-2 but still came up short in the end.
Third year Vega Jones and Levin each netted hat tricks for the Blues while Wentling and Dundee each tallied once.
After finishing the late-night doubleheader in Greenwich on Day Two, the Blues drove to Philadelphia overnight before heading to Villanova to play the Wildcats Saturday morning.
The Toronto lineup which was already depleted heading into the tour with starters Kaitlyn Palmer and Emma Benoit out, lost starting center forward Jones just before the game due to an illness.
A tired Blues team with a thin bench was no match for the Wildcats who broke open a close 3-2 game with two minutes to go in the first quarter by scoring five unanswered goals and then repeating the feat again later on.
Levin responded with another hat trick for the Blues while Wentling and third year Julia Decaire added singles.
The loss left Toronto with a 2-2 road trip.
The Blues have two weeks to prepare for the National Collegiate Water Polo (NCWP) championships that will be held at McMaster from November 25-27.
