BLUES FINISH SEASON ON A HIGH

In the final game of their 2022 OUA season, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team defeated the Wilfrid Laurier Goldenhawks 11-8 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23) at Varsity Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After narrowly missing out on the top spot in Pool B, the Blues looked to end their season on a high note in the consolation final.

The Goldenhawks opened the scoring in the first quarter, scoring back-to-back goals in the opening minutes by way of Ryleigh Elliott. The Blues responded swiftly scoring three unanswered goals to close out the first. Second-year Lily Brooks put the Blues on the board, while veteran Jessica Diantonio added two more to pull the lead in Toronto's favour.

With the momentum in the Blues corner, Diantonio capitalized opening the second quarter scoring. Second-year midfield Rylin Cromier extended the Blues lead to three just 1:30 later. As the Blues looked to protect their lead, Laurier's Elliot added her third of the game to pull the contest within two. Diantonio responded, netting her fourth of the game. Goldenhawks Liz Illas closed out the second quarter scoring, narrowing Toronto's lead to 6-4 at the break.

Toronto's Cromier scored back-to-back goals to open the third quarter, giving the Blues an 8-4 lead. While Laurier's Elliot was able to muster one back. Trading goals to close out the quarter, known standouts Diantonio and Elliot each scored to leave things at 9-6.

Diantonio final goal contribution came in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, bringing her tally to six goals on the day. Laurier's Kayln Downer solo effort pulled the Goldenhawks within three, however, Cromier responded scoring the Blues eventual game-winner with five minutes left to play. Determined to go down fighting, Laurier scored in the final minute.
