BLUES OPEN PLAYOFFS WITH CONVINCING WIN

The Varsity Blues women's water polo team opened the 2021 NCWP West Division playoffs with a convincing 29-5 win over the visiting Guelph Gryphons.

Toronto struck quickly with two goals to open the game.  However, Guelph came back with two markers of their own to tie things up 2-2.  The Blues then scored three unanswered goals before the Gryphons responded with two minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Toronto's counterattack then accounted for two more tallies before the period ended with the Blues leading 7-3.

The Blues came roaring out of the gate to start the second quarter and ran off eight straight goals before the Gryphons managed to get their fourth of the game. However, just like the end of the first period, Toronto answered quickly and often to end the first half ahead 18-4.

The home side then scored five times to start the third quarter giving up a single tally near the end leaving the score 23-5 in the Blues' favour entering the final frame.

It was a shutout fourth quarter for the Blues as six more goals were added to the total.

As usual, the team's leading scorer, Tyanna Supreme (Montreal) led the way with six goals, the third time this season she has accomplished the feat. Right behind Supreme with five tallies was Lauren Dundee (Perth, Scotland).  Tori Wilson (Kitchener) and Vega Jones (Surrey, B.C.) each had hat tricks. Deena Charles (Langley, B.C.), Chloe MacVicar (Irvine, California), Serena Spencer (London, Ontario) and Gabby Vas (Edmonton) all scored twice.  Emily Grossman (Sunnyvale, California), Alexandra Lee (Palo Alto, California), Julianna Hill (Victoria, B.C.) and Hannah Levin (Calgary) added singles.

The victory puts the Blues in a position to claim a spot in the NCWP championship game at home, which would take place on December 4 against the winner of the East Division playoffs, should Toronto win at McMaster on Wednesday.
